I love this hug. Sam is prepared to get raked over the coals for ignoring Dean’s orders to stay out of the hunt. He’s doing his usual placating apology jabber, but Dean isn’t listening at all. He just grabs Sam and drags him into that hug that says, I love you, you were right, you needed to be in the hunt, I needed you, you saved my life, we’re a team. And it’s true, he does need Sam, not just because Sam is the center of his universe, but for very practical reasons. There are plenty of times that Sam has saved his life and vice versa.
Jared and Jensen work this hug so expertly. Sam was totally blindsided by the it. He was expecting an ass-chewing, but he leans into it and pats Dean on the back by way of acceptance. Dean looks so serious until Sam hugs him back and then he gets that little smile, like he knows that everything is okay. Sam gets the message, and Dean gives that little nod and pats Sam on the back like, Okay, good talk. Glad we hashed that out.
